The Power Animal Dance Ritual
This post is dedicated to the Power Animal Dance Ritual, a Shamanic ritual to call in and connect with one’s Power Animal. It is inspired by Michael Harner’s ritual as he outlines in his book “The Way of the Shaman”.
What is Shamanism?
Shamanism is the practice of communing with the Spirit Realm in order to restore balance and power, for ourselves and our communities.
We do so by shifting our state of consciousness from its Ordinary State into the Shamanic State, where we can call on our Spirit Guides to ask for guidance and healing.
Since the dawn of time, people around the world have found different ways to shift consciousness and connect with the Spirits. In this ritual, we use drumming, dance, and voice.
What are Power Animals?
The Power Animal, or Animal Guardian, is one of our key spirit guides, providing us with good health, inner clarity, and the power to be who we are.
It is thought that all of us come into the world with one, or several, Animal Guardians. However, due to social conditioning and trauma, we often lose touch with them, leaving us feeling dis-empowered and vulnerable to physical, mental, and spiritual illness.
The purpose of this ritual is to call the Power Animal back in. Back in to our body. Back in to our heart, its rightful home.
Every person has their own sacred connection to their Power Animal. Some may have the same animal throughout their lives, for others, it may change as times change.
What happens in the Ritual?
The ritual is held in a small group. One person at a time takes the floor, where they are guided with drumming to call in their Animal and channel their power through dance and voice.
This begins with setting a clear intention to call in the guide, cleansing the body with smoke, and letting go of the mind. As the drumming begins, we move our awareness into the body, into the movements.
The connection starts with a sensation, with an intuition of some animal presence. As we lean into it, it grows bigger, more sentient, more alive. Visions may occur as we enter the Shamanic State.
The Animal guides us into its natural movements, its natural sounds. We may find ourselves becoming the Animal, opening us to fully receiving its spiritual power. As we reach the end of the ritual, we invite the Animal to stay in our body, to stay in our heart, its rightful home.
In the ritual, the energy may intensify significantly, as the Animal’s power can be wild and raw. This is not to be feared. The Power Animal is a purely beneficial spirit here to help us on our journey on Earth. By leaning into and channeling this power, we come to find that it is liberating us to help us be who we fully are.
